The slaves were freed by the republicans.

In accordance with their philosophy:
Personal and financial freedom and independence.

The democrats wanted to keep slavery.. in accordance with their philosophy: you are a helpless victim and need to be taken care of (as long as you work/vote for us)

These philosophies haven’t changed.

Then the southern democrats left the party in droves due to the influx of new black voters during the civil rights movement. The newly elected dems catered to the black vote and the old gaurd either left or did so as well.
