What causes a person to be blunt and straightfoward?

My foster father is straightfoward and speaks his mind. He tells the truth even it if hurts. He doesn't sugarcoat it and is blunt at times. I've been offended by him but I respect him for being honest. My best friend is blunt too and speaks her mind.

There's a difference between being honest and just using words to deliberately hurt people. People who do that sort of thing are wretched.
