What causes a person to be blunt and straightfoward?

My foster father is straightfoward and speaks his mind. He tells the truth even it if hurts. He doesn't sugarcoat it and is blunt at times. I've been offended by him but I respect him for being honest. My best friend is blunt too and speaks her mind.

@SoulKey I agree. I guess she's asking for the sake of different types of people. Some of us can be sensitive about certain topics. While others can just be cool. We're all different somehow.
