Where your feelings get beyond your comfort zone (too intense for the other person like love) that your reflex to protect yourself from getting hurt kicks in hardcore ? And you actually contemplate ending it or severely backing off?

I'm going through some distant cousin of this, someone from my past reached out to reconcile but I fear we're not on the same page and I can't say I'm afraid of falling, that happened long ago and I just couldn't really let go, I'm afraid of opening myself back up for loss grief again.
