@MethDozer sure if ya have 200 $ just laying around , my computers i got from Dumpster diving but i'm also self taught repairing and modifying tower systems and comparing free fixit programs from the internet

@FurryFace See that's different. You can do it yourself and that's another side to my point.
If you can repair it yourself then fix it, but most people can't and waste lots of money on machines more powerful than they need and then waste money on repairing them. When they would be better off economically buying cheap machines and saying fuck it when they break.

I know people who will buy an $800 laptop and all they do is web browse, email, and social media. Saying they want one that will last for years an d years. Then they have to have them repaired. Which is expensive. Thing is they can just buy disposable cheap ones over and over and be ahead in the wallet. What's the point of it being usable longer if it is still costing you more in the end? There isn't any.

@MethDozer Good point. I spent $7.00 on a broken laptop so I could poke and prod and figure everything out. Now I just build my own or repair the $800 pc that I can get on ebay for next to nothing.🤓

@FurryFace Yep. Though not really. I have machines that are 10 years old and still could be used for what most people use them for.

A great way to keep them running good for a long time? Ditch windows which clogs up your computer with too many updates and patches.

@JimminyChristmas It hads a stigma that it's hard to use and you have to be a techy. It's not true. Well maybe with some of the Arch distros.
My opinion is it's cleaner and more straight forward than Mac or Windows and the best part? Free software!

@FurryFace Seriously? You sure? If it has UEFI instead of BIOS then there is a few tricks to do it. They purposely made it a bit trickier to load it with UEFI. Bastards

@MethDozer I can get through just about anything without using the command line. If I happen to run into anything, there is lots of help online. I've intentionally done this with Linux Mint. Another upside of Linux, my computer never gets hot. I'm pretty sure that most second or third graders could install Mint OS.

@FurryFace No one needs to either to use Linux distros like Mint, (cringe) Ubuntu, Zorin, or LXLE. I have had several people bring me their computers or hand me downs that windows was busted on and swapped them to one of those and everyone I have becomes sold on and loves it.


I know I'm sounding fanboy here, but it's true. It's not that complicated to use Linux.

@JimminyChristmas I always notice a major difference in the fans running and temps when switching from Windows to a Linux distro in my dual boot machines too. It's not as resource heavy and having shit that doesn't need to run, runnning.


The terminal is so awesome once you aren't scared of it. It just seems confusing at first but after awhile people get used to the commands.

@MethDozer i tried to load in win 2000 on my Pentium 3 but it still messed up , and win ME kept losing the CD rom or caused systems to run in protected mode which made a Pentium 4 run like an XT for Gawds sake

@FurryFace Microsoft isn't really all that great of a model for software development. They are just established as hell and have a model slightly better than Apple.

@MethDozer i found an emac or imac has an old operating system osx 10.4 but i need an old USB keyboard that has the Command key to change stuff like the Administrators fucking access code , can't even change flash player without that never mind upgrading the OP SYS

@FurryFace Ridiculous innit? It never ceases to amaze me how many people are willing to pay more money for a system designed to screw you over and limit your choices. Nowadays the whole " mac is less virus prone" doesn't even hold true as well.
Their GUIs suck and look and function like a children's toy too.

@FurryFace Apple doesn't believe in legacy use. Planned and manufactured obsolescence is their market strategy. Same reason they send out updates that purposely make their devices run shittier after they aged to a certain point.
