Is human nature designed to prevent us from progressing beyond our capabilities?

It seems we have built-in speed bumps to prevent us from extending beyond certain capabilities. For example, on an individual level we might be (super) shy which blocks us from becoming too socially active. Likewise, as a human race, we subject ourselves to death and destruction at regular intervals which prevents us from advancing civilization beyond a certain point by keeping us distracted by killing each other. Is this dynamic some form of divine intervention?

I don't know. I guess that the only "stops" would be the ones that each person chooses to impose on themselves, or of course, death. That's a very insightful question though.
