I believe that a hospital has to treat you, so leaving without being discharged shouldn't affect that. It is probably all legal things that the hospital thinks of... you would have to sign a form or they would mark it such that they did not discharge, so if things got worse, or didn't get better like they should, they are not liable.

It's your choice to refuse treatment , but it's not advised, unless it is a ethical reason

You risk your life, and you risk losing insurance coverage. And if you sue for malpractice, it can be declined.
