What was it like making a phone call in the 1940's?

You rang up the operator and asked them to connect you to a call.. and then they listened in to everything you said

@whateverhappens I grew up on a farm that had a Party Line. 1 ring was for one house, 2 fast rings for the second house and 3 fast rings for the 3rd house. Party Lines ended in about the late 70's

@MikefromEP I remember answering my grandparent's phone accidentally when it rang the 'someone else is using this line' ring. Noone told me!
