hi Whispersindreams
Isn't one or the other enough? I mean a person who was a sadist would get pleasure from tormenting a victim.Equally a psychopath would presumably do so in some way but both seems overkill.
Best wishes

@sogdianrock No, it's definitely both.

hi Whispersindreams
ok I do not know anything about either thankfully - although I have come across sociopathy at work and socially.

@sogdianrock The two go together. Sociopaths (formerly known as psychopaths) tend to be sadists

@Whispersindreams I'm a psychology lecturer /professor. Psychopaths are now called sociopaths. Don't rely on Google.

@Whispersindreams Depends. Different writers. Refer to a professional journal instead maybe.

@SW-User Well social science isn't really a science and is bound to have a bunch of experts disagreeing about the very basics.

SW-User
@Whispersindreams A PhD. As said, different writers. Refer to a professional journal, rather than a magazine. It's an opinion rather than grounded in evidrnce. Maybe even look at the Bible of the Psychiatry profession, the DSM

SW-User
@Whispersindreams May be see journals grounded in evidence, and the DSM
But we're agreed about the sadism whatever term is being used

@SW-User If you do a search there are a lotta people with that opinion. Makes you wonder how they got their degrees huh? There is no opinion in real science.

SW-User
Social scientists still use the scientific method to undertake research. But let's face it, even "hard" sciences like physics is full of disention, disagrerment. However, what you say as part of your question seems 100% accurate to me
