Yes, just digital imagery, doctored up, maybe. However, I've seen real photos of things in space that look just like that, but are real.

They're generally referred to as the pillars of creation. Basically a bunch of dust and stuff in the middle of the nowhere, however that is not how they really look. This picture is colorized though like almost every picture from space.
