Yes, just digital imagery, doctored up, [b]maybe.[/b] However, I've seen real photos of things in space that look just like that, but are real.

They're generally referred to as the pillars of creation. Basically a bunch of dust and stuff in the middle of the nowhere, however that is not how they really look. This picture is colorized though like almost every picture from space.
