I've been working on a crossword puzzle of my own for years. In each of the 4 corners, together with the middle square, the design of this rebus crossword allows for the placement of a decimal/dot/spot/point/period to approximate the quincunx face of a gaming die.

For example: the span that runs top to bottom through the middle square has as its clue "Cheetahs and servals, for example". The 15 squares would include a period which would mean "spot" so the answer would look like this:

african.tedcats (African spotted cats).

My maternal grandfather was Welsh. I never knew him seeing as he died in 1912.
