I think it's a great support system to alcohol treatment. CBT and things like that are treatment; AA is fellowship.
AA does not require religion or belief in a God; in fact, one of the founders was agnostic. What it does require is belief that an element stronger than our own resolve can the addiction. It can be a sponsor, a group, nature, a book whatever.
AA is, at its core, about surrender, acceptance of another way and active participation in fellowship and support. Nothing more, nothing less.
