Thank you very much for your suggestions.
We will be reviewing your idea and will take it into consideration.

However, I believe I see several instances where this method can be misused to take advantage of legitimate members.


Example:
1) A "troll" creates a post insulting an individual they dislike on this site.

2) The victim naturally responds on the troll's post, to defend themselves.

3) The troll presses the "Stun Button" and gets the user temporarily disabled from the site.


In other cases, post author may simply be moody or dislike an individual who isn't necessarily a troll/spammer.

They may not agree with the commenter's response, and may decide to punish them with such a tool.

So I see quite a few cases where this feature can be misused and cause confusion on this site.

We are however, working to release a Report Button very soon.

When a certain number of users report an offensive post, the poster will become temporarily suspended until staff can look into the situation.

The post may also be removed with sufficient reports.

As mentioned previously, we will be working on developing a reputation system on this site, based on each user's history and behavior.

Those members who keep within the rules, make accurate reports, etc... will gain better reputation over time, and vice versa.

The reports of reputable members will have greater impact than those of low reputation.

With this strategy, we believe that we will be putting some moderation power and control in the hands of trusted members within this community.

While members who are troublesome will not be able to get away with much.

Repeatedly annoying others and breaking rules, will make the offending user get limited/suspended much more quickly the next times around.

We will later allow you to just visit the blocked profile and block from there.
But at the moment this should get the job done! Thank you for your suggestion.

Most links should work with opening in new tabs (which I believe is what you were saying).

I think we all should be grateful for the new EP or should I say SW!
Its like a city... slums and red light districts, but also churches and hospitals. People who care, good people, bad people, mad people and sad people..

Because people tend to get a lot of hearts, those notifications are excluded from email notifications. You should get emails about new replies and circle additions though. If that's not the case, please make sure email notifications are enabled in your account settings.

1) The most recent additions will be at the top of the list.
2) It does work for me when I choose "Open page in new tab". If it doesn't work for you, you may need to change your browser options. What browser do you use?
3/4) Great suggestions!
5) That would be useless as long as you need to refresh the page to get notifications, but I'd like them to appear in realtime and then your suggestion would be a great addition.
6) This process seems to have been started already. The homepage doesn't fill as fast anymore as it used to and there are a lot of topics that I'm glad to hardly see anymore, so it looks like the feed is already getting filtered. It would be nice to apply that filtering only to the Stories and Questions tabs though and filter the homepage even further as you suggested, and as it was on EP.

@questionWeaver: human moderation is indeed a burden on the team, but EP proved that scripted moderation doesn't work and there are plenty of enthusiastic members who would be willing to help out. As you can be a bully without adult content and be respectful with adult content, I don't see that as a valid criterium for the ability to stun others. But the team seems to have some fair ideas to handle the moderating properly, so I'll wait how that works out.

Hey Nuno great work so far and i appreciate what you are doing here.A few things I observed so far

1) When some one adds me I get a notification but it doesn't show the specific username/person(s) just shows the whole list.

2)We are unable to open multiple site webpages using right click --> open page.Once I do that the link is opened in the existing webpage itself.

3) A feature to reply to a comment which is posted as a sub thread bellow the target comment (nested thread).

4) The stories on the home page are finite and we need a "more" button once we reach the end to add more stories to the feed.Same feature required for the "recent activity" tab.


5) A notification with a beep sound or a web page notification (message box) would be great to have ;) e.g "xyx hearted your story".

6) The newsfeed/home page should have targeted content from the groups one has joined and also group users/friends activity to make it more relevant.

It's really nice how you people tell us what's going on. Even this very group and your reports here are a nice touch. That you are taking the time to do this and keep us informed sends a very good and positive message about this site to the members. Thank you very much for your efforts to make a great site. The stun button is an interesting idea. I wouldn't want an author to be able to kick people off the website (even temporarily), but preventing them from replying again within an hour would be nice.

Of course the block button already takes care of that and you can remove someone from your block list if you don't want it to be permanent, but to set a time limit after which the person is automatically unblocked, would be a nice addition for the future.

As much as is seems that I like moderation ... I am not a fan ... rather, I object to it, in most it's forms ... for a different reason, than you might think.

The Wall Street Journal highlighted an in-depth analysis performed for investors in IPOs of social media sites.

The analysis determined the #1 cause for a social site to fail, was moderation.

They noted the odd paradigm with unmoderated anynomous sites. That the wild wrst of those sites, seemed to drive people away, but actually thrived ... with an identifiable 100% correlation that the moment a site starts earnst moderation it never rises higher, and starts a downward path..... they predicted EPs demise long ago.

The investment community's conclusion was, moderation at the site level, in any way, which places the burden to officiate disputes with an uncompensated group ... who make value judgements inconsistent with the community ... offending everybody and doing no good whatsoever ... destroys the spirit, then the popularity.

The article noted that moderation on each site was induced by features and lack of features programmatically related ... not the people.

The article recommended moderation be performed at the site of the infraction ... in your situation, by long-form story authors.

I would like to see you guys make the big money ... you are doing the work.

@ChocolateSauce: That is not possible right now, but will be added in the future. There are already more than a million groups, so if you search for cuddling or cuddle, you may find that one about hating or disliking them already exists. (I haven't checked this, so I can't be sure, but it is likely to exist.)

Yes, I evaluated those uses too

I have a friend ... really a friend ... that would stun me if I said Good morning ... but I get that.

If somebody was in a bad mood, wrote a story, I replied in a positive way ... and then they stunned me ... it would be clear I had crossed the line ... and I should be gently admonished.

The reporting techniques are delayed, soft and adds expensive burden to you guys. You don't have time for that.

Maybe make the button available to authors without adult content.

But, we need something more than blocking and soft reporting.

Give it a trial ... place it just on my friend's stories ... I will monitor and give you an action report ...

TY ... appreciate the thoughts ... yours are sound ... the block is a tender make believe ... trolls laugh, cause there is no impact to the offender (the one writing the offending reply) ... The stun has retribution ... minor, but retribution ... it makes the story author feel better protected ... so we can write more freely ... it places us all in a posture to write in a way that is less offensive ...

Now, protecting a troll has ZERO support from me ... their root intention is disruption ... disrupting them for a short while, would only be appropriate ... at which point, I remind myself, there is never really freedom of expression ... it really is "level of tolerance"

I would ask that we be able to block people that have blocked us.They can unblock, make a comment and then block again. Then we do not have the ability to block them.
It would be nice to have the choice to block them so do not access to our posts.
I realize that pm would take care of most of the problems regarding this, but there are individuals I would rather just entirely cut off entirely.
Immaturepeople cannot seem to help themselves.

The lack of impact on the offender is indeed a downside of the block function in some cases. However I'm fairly sure that the stun button would cause more trouble in the hands of trolls than it would do good in the hands of the rest of the community. If it can be linked to the planned reputation system and be restricted to people with a sufficiently high level, it would be a great tool.

... hey, we need the STUN button, to reduce the troll traffic ... just schedule the release ... as long as folks know it us coming ... it will reduce troll traffic.

As a refresher: a button on each reply, available to the story/question author, which deletes a reply and takes the replier offline for 1 hour (the stun)

Lets the story author determine what is offensive.
