The only way a recession would wipe out your portfolio is if you were invested in the stock market, such as mutual funds.

@swirlie American retirement plans (401K) are generally invested in the stock market, yes. Pensions are largely a thing of the past here. And even real estate can crash.

That's amazing to read. I never knew that pension plans are largely a thing of the past in the USA and I never knew that the US had experienced real estate crashes before. Those are both new ones in the real world for me!
