Why is mental health often such a taboo topic?

Trippin · F
Saddens me. I know that the more I speak out about my own issues, the more I understand and accept that my fear of rejection is in my head. Its my thoughts..my ego that wants to keep me as the victim. Once I simply observe that thinker an not act upon its bullshit... My issues have no power over me. 🤷‍♀️
popmol · 22-25, M
@Trippin lucky :)
SW-User
It scares people they don't understand and when people fear something they'd rather avoid it than actually talk about it. It's the sad truth.
popmol · 22-25, M
@SW-User it is quite sad isn't it ;(
wackidywack · 22-25
@SW-User this is it
SW-User
Because people don’t understand it and it scares them…it’s unpredictable and can escalate so quickly as most of the suffering is hidden
popmol · 22-25, M
@SW-User we humans are scaredy cats!
BlueVeins · 22-25
because it's deeply personal, and people like to pretend like we're not animals and we're fully rational, but we are animals and we're not fully rational regardless of what we want.
popmol · 22-25, M
@BlueVeins its like those people not afraid of global warming thinking they are something while mother earth can easily kill us aéll xD we are highly emotional animals xD
DragonFruit · 61-69, M
It’s less taboo than it was....but too often in the past people with mental health issues have been viewed as being insane or even dangerous to society, so it has been something that a lot of people are reluctant to talk about.
Physical issues are more easily seen, and often more easily diagnosed then mental health issues. As this site shows, many people have mental health issues, and those are less well understood than physical issues. If I break a leg or have arthritis, that’s pretty well understood by most....but most don’t know how to view depression, anxiety, bipolar disorders or suicidal tendencies
popmol · 22-25, M
@DragonFruit true! but it pisses me off i'm he re with depression and such and i know how it feels but then some family members don't talk to me! i understand what thye go through yet they keep it bottled up!
Not anymore. I recently went public here regarding the sexual abuse to me from my mom. I learned many years later of her mental issues. There was NO CPS at that time. No one I could trust to tell. Dad was in denial of her sickness.
@popmol Glad to hear. You already know the negativity is why I stopped the PM's.
popmol · 22-25, M
@Grateful4you haha yeah i know xD but i can't do much about it currently :p
@popmol I know that bud. ✌️🏽
MougyWolf · 36-40, M
because society used to just lock us in the looney bin, and that has only really changed kind of recently, that would be my first guess :P
popmol · 22-25, M
@MougyWolf that doesn't help :p
SW-User
Because people don't like talking about what's not "normal" according to their standards.
popmol · 22-25, M
@SW-User bah bah!
I do feel like it’s an uncomfortable topic for many people because at such young ages we’re often conditioned to believe what we’re feeling and how we’re feeling isn’t important. So, as we get older I think many people become dismissive towards their own feelings, and I also feel like most friendship groups don’t typically allow that type of vulnerability within them, because of how unnatural people have made mental health.
popmol · 22-25, M
@Stark mmh wel luckily i got it opened up at a young age!
BalmyNites · F
I don’t believe it is, not any more. Perhaps so a few years ago, but there’s virtually no stigma to it now, it’s open, transparent & with much support readily available from many avenues. Added to which, certain celebrities & even the Royals have come out in the open about their particular struggles, this being an excellent impetus for people to come forward & seek help 💜
popmol · 22-25, M
@BalmyNites it does help now that famous people have added there voices to the mix since we rather listen to a celebrity then a scientist :p
Darkskiescoming · 51-55, M
I will tell anyone that ask, I have been on meds for anxiety a long time. Anyone that is suffering from any type of mental issues should seek help and I could care less what people have to say. My well being is more important than their ignorance.
popmol · 22-25, M
@Darkskiescoming :) thats lovely!
Because no one really understands it
popmol · 22-25, M
@SweetNSassy well some do!
HermannFegelein · 26-30, M
It actually doesn’t feel taboo at all to me. I’ve always found it quite easy to do so. People find me odd because of this but that’s precisely why I find them so odd too 😄 It doesn’t bother me. More often than not I’m interested in this side of people.
popmol · 22-25, M
@HermannFegelein same here i'm very open but others think its weird, like why haven't you been over lately and i'm like " was depressed and not feeling social or good lately so i haven't been outside much" and then they are like "gasp"
People are ignorant
popmol · 22-25, M
@Greyscale @Greyscale definitly!
Havamal16 · 31-35, M
Not so much taboo as it is over discussed. When every 14 year old Kylie and Ashleigh “advocate” for mental health but are merely speaking out of their asses, people get burnt out on the topic.
popmol · 22-25, M
@Havamal16 well i mean if they are jsut casually talking out of their ass then people will get the wrong idea
ImRileyTheDog · 22-25, F
All of it I would say

Anything suicide related

All disorders, illnesses, therapy, trauma, everything
popmol · 22-25, M
@ImRileyTheDog yeah it pisses me off!
ImRileyTheDog · 22-25, F
@popmol It’s not an easy thing to talk about

And a lot of people do not know how to manage it or seek professional assistance

In some cases even professionals don’t even know what they’re doing, it’s trial and error finding the right balance
popmol · 22-25, M
@ImRileyTheDog true! which sucks! happily in that case i'm easy, well i can't figure out hwo to fix myself even with help but at least i can explain everythign easy!
Because some people are nucking futs
popmol · 22-25, M
@stratosranger well you said fucking nuts but without the fucking :p and who knows more about nuts then gays and squirrels :p sorry probably a bad joke or a far jumping one but thats what my mind does xD
It was a quantum leap but…ok! @popmol
popmol · 22-25, M
@stratosranger well i was watchign a comedy show and there was a gay joke so it was fresh in my mind :p and i like science so a quantum leap is not out of the options for me :p
LandOfOz · 61-69, M
Because the media portray it ĺike it involves dangerous people. Which is very untrue
popmol · 22-25, M
@LandOfOz well theres dangerous people btu theres also just sad people like me :p
LandOfOz · 61-69, M
@popmol dangerous ones are in the minority.
popmol · 22-25, M
@LandOfOz haha yeah xD
pattycakechamp · 26-30, F
Friend used to joke that he "wished it was just a broken leg, at least then it wouldn't require an explanation."
popmol · 22-25, M
@pattycakechamp xD that woudl be easy wouldn't it!
romper69 · 51-55, M
Because a lot people who do not suffer from mental health problems just brush it off as trivial.
popmol · 22-25, M
@romper69 yeah i guess i could see that!
lovingdead · 31-35, M
It isnt easily understood, no simple answers. Thus its difficult to pick a side. Thus taboo
popmol · 22-25, M
Stopmakingsense · 56-60, F
Because it's a class struggle. The ownership drives people mad and we're the results.
popmol · 22-25, M
@Stopmakingsense that sucks ;(
kodiac · 22-25, M
I think a lot of people see a part of themselves and don't want to face that.
popmol · 22-25, M
@kodiac lame! face it face!
TheBannibalOne · 61-69, M
You just need to know who to talk to.😎
popmol · 22-25, M
TheBannibalOne · 61-69, M
@popmol I was no.3 on Yahoo of all time.
Psychology.
popmol · 22-25, M
@TheBannibalOne impressive!
wackidywack · 22-25
people are chicken
popmol · 22-25, M
@wackidywack pok poook!
wackidywack · 22-25
@popmol L, that is a rooster
popmol · 22-25, M
@wackidywack no! this is a belgian chicken! its like woof for an english dog and waf for a dutch one!
fun4us2b · M
It's getting better...
popmol · 22-25, M
@fun4us2b true :)
uncalled4 · 56-60, M
The public at large doesn't know shit about it. They think they know because they watched "Monk" on TV and there is so much more to it than that.
popmol · 22-25, M
@uncalled4 ooh i see! tv shwos don't often show the good stuff or the very extreme examples !
uncalled4 · 56-60, M
@popmol But it was the dumbed-down version. OCD is so much more than they ever showed. Something like ADHD must be even harder to display, although Monty Python did it in a few scenes in Holy Grail.
popmol · 22-25, M
@uncalled4 aah yeah adhd is very tough it has so many options and so much things that can be!
MartinTheFirst · 26-30, M
Because people are bad at communicating
popmol · 22-25, M
@MartinTheFirst yeah people suck!
MartinTheFirst · 26-30, M
@popmol often they suck at what theyre doing

@popmol [c=004A59]Yes, I agree. Neither the taboo nor the prejudice should still exist.[/c]
popmol · 22-25, M
