It has two meanings, depending on context.
1.
the action of accepting or yielding to a superior force or to the will or authority of another person.
2.
the action of presenting a proposal, application, or other document for consideration, decision or judgement.~
~~~
Submission to another's leadership, level of knowledge or experience, place in the social hierarchy or dominance.
It can be one way that a person or social animal responds to a demand or command.
It can include guessing what the other wants.
Or it can be a symptom of an inability to say no or to stand up for oneself.
Alternative to submission (to something unpleasant) can be:
cutting off,
running away,
avoiding being noticed (hiding, playing dead or sick, or camouflage),
rebellion (civil war, activism, lobbying),
accumulating grudges and resentment until exploding in violence or verbal rage,
unconscious passive aggression.
manipulation,
or deliberate calculated and secretive sabotage.
In my view, neither dominance nor submission is healthy in an intimate relationship -- though I accept that this might be different for couples who are into BDSM.
