Why do we strive to be happy?

For me, someone who's been depressed for a long time, I can't comprehend this.

@emereese Oh wow, if you're depressed this question makes so much more sense. If you can treat the illness, happiness won't take so much energy and you can just enjoy yourself without becoming exhausted.

@CaptainCanadia I wish. I'm just tired of everything I guess. Society expects us to be happy always but what about us people who can't be happy, they cast us out and label us instead of helping us. It makes me sick.

@emereese I understand that. My wife had a major, major depressive crash two years ago and I've been helping her as best I can. And when you have no energy to do anything it's just so much easier to hide and quit for a while.
