I do crossword puzzles

This particular book - Mr Wisdom's Whopper I have been doing for 20 years?

Today was my best effort in all that time.
Of the 365 clues, I did not know two answers and I made a simple spelling mistake which led me to not knowing two others.
The two clues I did not know -
Mandarin Gown? 9 letters - C * * O N G S A M
Oceania's highest mount? 6 - 4 * U * C A K J * * A

I try the crossword in my local paper each day, but rarely manage to complete it!

This is the cryptic, not the adjacent "ordinary" one based on general-knowledge and synonyms; but sometimes the riddles are so twisted it's hard to match them even to their answers published in the next edition.

You do pick up the compiler's traits, but these puzzle-pages are syndicated and the crosswords are probably by two or more compilers, separately; so when you think you've cracked one, the next day's style is different.

e.g......

Supervisor loses article for stable accommodation. (6 letters - 5th being 'E').

Fruit to slice thinly, we hear. (4 - starts with 'P').

A game that might end in romance? (6)

Two short males, one persecuted (6 - 4th is 'T')

'

.

Respectively:

Manger, Pear (or Pare - the crossing word(s) would resolve the ambiguity), Tennis, Victim.

The last was more or less quoted from a real puzzle, but I concocted the other three from their puzzles' general styles.

Crosswords are fun . I’m not the best speller so I have to work around some words 😂. I like sudoku even the ones with 16 squares.
