Beware if you have kids and install games on their devices...

My 8 y/i daughter just asked if she could install a game called 'geometry dash'. The google play store page indicates it includes ads.

The game requires acceptance of TOS and privacy policy. Upon reading the TOS it says that their games are prohibited to be used by minors under the age of 13, so I had to tell me daughter she can't have that game on her tablet.

Many app-based games do not disclose these sorts of terms, so beware.

Well how would they know how old she is

@lissah They wouldn't, especially if the parent obtains the game.

I wonder though, the wisdom of giving a "smart"-phone to a child so young anyway.

Why would Google be publishing childrens' games "prohibited" for children under some nominal age of its own choosing?

Advice on the age range at which game is pitched is one thing, based on what most children understand at that age, and is normal practice.

But "prohibited" though? Is the real problem some of the advertisements the company cynically places within it?

That particular game is fine for any age. 13+ because it allows for custom built levels that they can't moderate so easily. My kids wanted this one as well a few years back. I just had them play it in offline mode.

I imagine that the word "prohibited" is just to show that they have complied with Australia's recent legislation for youngsters.
There is probably no age verification in place and it relies on you telling her "No".
