Isn't that exactly what they attempted in Reach? As a fan of H3, I promptly returned that game

Not really, they just made the game a little "larger scale" It kept the Halo feel, but ultimately failed in what Halo is (Arena Combat)

I dunno... that's when they started making big asymmetrical maps like CoD usually has and added loadouts and removed bullet travel time. They removed the trueskill ranks, too.

@Invisible: It was to support bigger "open war" style maps.
If anything they were going for the Battlefield style there, making things very big and full of vehicles.
Plus bullets never had a travel time in Halo anyway lol
That I can agree with, then again it was a time where you had to put real time into getting ranked up, people prefer playing more casual nowadays.

Halo 3 had bullet travel, and it made the game so much more balanced than the other halo games. It made small maps much more playable and added an important dynamic to BR fights when you could strafe to dodge bullets

Hmm, I played Halo 3 quite a lot and never noticed that.
