Anansi is the west African trickster god (sort of like Loki in Norse mythology). In the southern United States, tales of Anansi were adopted by Native Americans, having been imported by slaves. The skunk, in Native American mythology was a sort of monster, whose spray used to be fatal in ancient times.

For a Native American to name his or her child Skunk Anansi means that the child had very evil portents associated with the circumstances of his or her birth.
