Dress clothes laid out = plans for future
If the woman was the injured one the crutches would be gone along with her so he was the one using them which means he would have had trouble getting up on the end table

@Andrew19EightyFive Perhaps, but doesn't explain why his crutches are across the room or how he got up on the end table. Had he used a chair I might buy it as they have a back to hold onto on the way up.
