Construction kits: Meccano and an architectural equivalent called Bayko.

I also spent a lot of time trying to make things from tin-plate (cut from food tins), assembled by soldering. I don't think I ever managed to make anything effective until in my teens, and then it was simple radios.

My attempts to learn to repair broken clocks succeeded in making them.... even more broken. I am lucky I was never hit in the face by a suddenly-released mainspring or some part it catapulted from the half-dismantled clock at great speed. ( I had only a scrappy knowledge of how clocks work, and no proper clock-repairing tools including those used for unwinding and rewinding their powerful springs safely.)
