Is "metaverse" the new "blockchain"?

I.e. the thing all the lunatics believe will radically change our universe, but will eventually turn out to be one big niche thing that almost nobody will care about in 3-5 years from now?

Remember "revolutionary" 3D movies and when everyone and their mothers were rushing to buy VR headsets, if it didn't succeed back then I fail to see how it could now
The Meta thing was, I think, a transparent attempt to rebrand due to the negatives of "Facebook", and to try to replace their current broken record of meaningless--and incorrect!--drivel ["Facebook brings people together"] to a new level of obvious opacity ["Meta is the future, and it's going to be amazing, but it encompasses all that we're building for your new digital future."]. (At which point they take a pack of virtual "Meta" logos & put them in all our heads wherever they find a "facebook" ref.)
@MethDozer Yes, but you are now seeming to say metaverse = Meta, which isn't the case.

The metaverse is a notion predating the too-white guy and his predatory company.

Meta was their attempt to claim the future for their company (to me, it seemed to be a weak reflection of Jobs making Apple represent cool/the future). I think it was also influenced by the Redmond folks' approach to scaring off competition (announce vaporware and watch competitors--and, more importantly, their funding!--wither on the vine).

It now seems it sucked up billions with...what result or effect...? They planted a flag in vision space. This is done all the time.

@MethDozer The metaverse already was, and *is*, but I interpreted the post as the OP asking whether or not it will be like blockchain/*coin in terms of the furor of interest and investment fuelling a bubble of valuation.

The notion of the blockchain is interesting, and might well continue (by other than "miners"), but to pretend that substituting government-backed fiat money with an alternative fiat currency with fixed-yet-arbitrary rules of creation of the new currency seemed odd to me, esp. with the odd creation story of the blockchain/bitcoin system.

Similarly, the metaverse is, but Meta...is at least deprecated, it seems...a sort of virtual Edsel.
Maybe they’re still preparing against the millennium bug that should have ended civilisation back in 2000.

Don't dis 3D movies. I went to see Superman III when I was 12 and I'm still getting over the experience 🤓🤣

@jshm2 Metaverse greatly predates fb & Meta.

But I agree about Meta. lol

I couldn't give two sh-ts about either one (beyond the carbon footprint of crypto mining and such)
@SW-User I shudder to think that it probably IS happening, somewhere...

@SomeMichGuy on the SW Dark Web 💩💩

"Get 'em while they're hot!"
@SW-User Nearly fell over! LMAO

What a perfect reply!

Nah, it's far far dumber than blockchain. Blockchain is holding the beer and "watching this" right now.
