Let's be honest. Time travel probably wouldn't work anywhere near the way it does in the movies.

First of all, going back in time would create an alternate timeline, a parallel universe if you will. The timeline we're in here and now wouldn't be affected in the slightest. But now that you're back somewhere in time, good luck getting back to the timeline you came from. Unless you are smart and lucky enough to figure out how to put a return button on your machine, you have just managed to disappear forever from the perspective of this timeline.

So basically, now you're in a parallel universe with no way of getting back, and your actions won't even do the people you left behind any good. And even in the best case scenario, if you come back to your own timeline, it was all for nothing.

Going to the future would be even weirder. Because the future you're going to is a future in which you vanished one day without a trace. In a way, it would be educational, because you'd get a good look at how everyone you know would deal with you suddenly being gone. Kind of weird, but not all that helpful.

Basically, the only way time travel could affect this timeline is if you had the ability to return to it, and had the presence of mind to bring a person or object back with you.
