Memories sometimes make me laugh

Was just remembering when I had a dreadful job answering calls from people who wanted to open a new credit card.

I still smoked then ( if I hadn't been a smoker I would've started then!) and the smoking area was a weird tall wrought iron fence (presumably to keep employees from escaping). It was only accessible from inside the office.

I was already at work on the evening shift when my husband realized I'd forgotten my lunch and he brought it to me. I was outside on break, they told him.

He came around the back to the smoker's cage and passed it through the iron bars. Then he grasped the bars and wailed, "I'll wait for you until you get out." Along with the other twenty people in the cage with me, I laughed.

the smoker's cage

What an interesting way to corral chain smokers :) I was once one of them. I think it was the last refuge right before they even stopped hiring smokers and kicked any still smokers off the whole real estate.

I remember the "to whom it may concern" letter from the city district attorney advising all business, business landlords and renters of the potential consequences for anyone who still permitted, facilitated or made accommodations for smoking.

First we started gathering by the front door, then the back door, then on the loading docks, then in a little corner of the parking lot by the trash dumps.

It was like a prison, and so...so...so romantic that he devotedly waited until you were released or you escaped.
