I'd replace this with just a trial that gives a verdict establishing that he is wrong, then after he's heard all the evidence against him you can punish him if he continues spreading that line. It enforces yet again that if someone could be construed to act in your name that you have to pay for their actions but he never told his followers to threaten the families. I never much cared for the handling of restrictions like defamation. If you can sue a man for money for his speech I see no reason you can't give him an ultimatum to make a video where he has to tell his listeners that he was a liar. And if anything that should be the preferred choice to everyone because he actually has to own up to his misdeeds rather than just buy off the crimes like most lawsuits. You've probably heard settlement isn't admission of guilt well that's what I want because as is nobody has to learn anything.

@Jackaloftheazuresand They didn't do it because he encouraged followers to hurt anyone. They did it because defamation isn't covered under freedom of speech and for emotional distress/reputational damage. That's what the lawyers said anyways.
That's a good point and I would agree but Alex has stated numerous times he really does believe what he says. His defense lawyer said so and he's said that on public TV multiple times. Now there is something to be said about someone being mentally ill and I have no easy answers.
Because there is such thing as delusional disorder too and that Alex may be a functioning psychotic. I don't have an answer though.

@Jackaloftheazuresand Though I will say this, personally Alex got off kind of easy, they were rather nice enough to take him to court. Not everyone takes too kindly to bullying the parents of murdered children nor has the same morality as everyone else into what is just or not.

@Jackaloftheazuresand Though I see what you're saying and even agree.

@SatanBurger Their grounds for showing he was responsible for damage to their reputation were people like Lucy Richards who sent threats, that's how they determined it to be actionable defamation.

@Jackaloftheazuresand If Jones was forced to make a video, his followers would just say "they made him do it." It might be more meaningful to require him to travel around the country, giving talks to PTA meetings and civic groups on gun safety and why vaccination is important.

@LeopoldBloom They already say that so it doesn't make a difference but yes there are better services to extract atonement from him
