It flips a panel in your car's heating and cooling system so the air inside the cabin is recycled which allows for faster heating or cooling in extreme weather. Normal operation should have fresh air coming into the cabin but when it is very hot or very cold it is nice to be able to get to a nicer temperature faster.

@hippyjoe1955 Plus when one is in heavy traffic it can be used to eliminate the exhaust fumes from coming in.

@mysteryespresso Mine switches to recirculate when I turn the temperature control knob to either full heat or full cool. I can then switch it off when I want or simply move the knob off of full heat or full cool.

@Quimliqer You are right it would do that as well. I have never had to use it for that so it really isn't top of mind for me. lol
