When I was 6yo I had 'Sea Monkeys' but no bed bugs 🫣

@softspokenman I had the off-brand version of Sea Monkeys. Just brine shrimp. My dad laughed at me when I bought them. He said, "Yeah, the guy selling them points at the people who buy them and says, 'See? Monkeys!'"

He was right, lol.

@softspokenman I got the sea monkeys too but in my teens when I could buy them myself since my parents refused.

I was so disappointed

@Oneofthestormboys Mexican jumping beans are legit. Buy some.

Basically, they are seeds that have little caterpillars or worms inside. If you put them under a heat source, they will hop around until they're in the shade. Mexican kids play with them every year until the worms finish eating the inside of the seeds, become moths, and emerge. Up to you what to do with the moths.
@Oneofthestormboys Yeah, I bought some of those. They were a rip off. Little plastic capsules with sea monkeys inside. 😳

@Oneofthestormboys the Mexican jumping beans were the rage with my classmates. I don’t know what was inside them but they really jumped around and were fun
LordShadowfire · 46-50, M
@Jenny1234 They were caterpillars. I found that out when they pupated and escaped the seeds as moths. Great way to teach kids about the cycle of life, though.
Oneofthestormboys · 56-60, M
@Jenny1234 Are they from Mexico though?
LordShadowfire · 46-50, M
@Oneofthestormboys They are. They're a species of moth native to Mexico, that lays their eggs in a seed native to Mexico. As advertised, all the way.
Jenny1234 · 56-60, F
@Oneofthestormboys no clue. We just bought them at the toy store here
Jenny1234 · 56-60, F
You could probably buy them through Amazon
Oneofthestormboys · 56-60, M
@Jenny1234 Were the ones you had like the caterpillars inside seeds like LordShadowfire said? Or were they plastic thingies?
Jenny1234 · 56-60, F
@Oneofthestormboys they were actual beans. They weren’t plastic
Oneofthestormboys · 56-60, M
@Jenny1234 Did they hatch?
LordShadowfire · 46-50, M
@Oneofthestormboys I found you some.

Exactly the ones I remember. Never too old to play with these little fellas for the first time.
Oneofthestormboys · 56-60, M
@LordShadowfire Look at them! Might not be allowed in the U.K. in case they bugger up the local wildlife - I’ll look into it.
Jenny1234 · 56-60, F
@Oneofthestormboys I dont remember tbh. Were talking over 45 years ago
LordShadowfire · 46-50, M
@Jenny1234 I do know that if you put the seeds in a cage like a cricket cage, the moths won't be going anywhere when they hatch. But it is up to UK law, I suppose. Here in the US, we're free to purchase them.
Oneofthestormboys · 56-60, M
@LordShadowfire To be fair, they can just fly over the border there if they feel like it 😂
LordShadowfire · 46-50, M
@Oneofthestormboys That's true. They're probably Arizona jumping beans, Texas jumping beans, New Mexico jumping beans, California jumping beans...
Oneofthestormboys · 56-60, M
@LordShadowfire Anywhere in range basically! Hahahaha!
