When somebody catfishes somebody online do they think if they ever meet the person, that the person will accept that they did that and be fine with it

Or is it more about they know they will never meet the person and so why not just pretend they are that person in the pic?

I had someone off here catfish me badly. They had a womens profile and i talked to them for ages believing they were female then one day they tell me their actually male and show me pics of themself. Like no. Im not your friend anymore.
