Interesting Evening
Traveling again (still) and in spite of my better judgement, because someone special instigated a craving and because it was only possible to get half of the craving, I went with it. I headed to Culvers (Wisconsin Fast Food) for an Ice Cream at about 9PM.
It wasn't far from the hotel, so I figured I could get my treat (a "concrete mixer" with heath, oreo and cookie dough mixed in) and get back to the hotel without it melting.
As I waited at the window (fast food is a misnomer) I happened to be looking towards the intersection just about a half a block away when a small car was turning, signals on. Holy shit that one behind is moving fast....Wham! rear ending the car that was turning....quite a loud crash, followed by an even louder crash as the car behind that one sequentially smashed into the other one....now three cars involved.
I was obviously distracted as the guy at the window said, "what was that? and handed me my treat." Gotta go, I told him.
I figured I better get over there and at least help if I could. By the time I was pulling up, everyone was out of their respective vehicle and even though air bags had deployed in all of them and you could see a bit of blood on faces, they seemed largely OK. There were other folks that had stopped and run over and I decided that, since there were already plenty of folks there, either helping or rubbernecking and because I could see red and blue lights and here sirens on getting closer, that I would just be in the way and besides....my ice cream was melting.
I avoided all the debris in the road and turned the opposite direction of the hotel, making a u turn using a minimall parking lot and circumventing the whole mess, which by the time I got to the intersecting road was swarmed with cop cars.
Hell of a way to ruin someone's Friday night...not paying attention...times two. The only one not to blame was the first car and it was certainly totaled as it had been pushed into a traffic light pole and smashed both front and back.
Fucking people need to pay better attention...pure luck there was not a serious injury.
On the bright side, I made it back to my room with my ice cream relatively unmelted and enjoyed it, Albiet my beard had to serve as a bib with dripped ice cream having to be cleaned out of it.
On the dark side, the second half of the craving was far out of reach except in my mind and I had to settle for thinking about it.
