When I was a kid, they sometimes had so much snow in Michigan's Upper Peninsula that people with a garage under the house would have their driveways fill up and they'd dig out to the road in tunnels through which an adult could walk upright.
This is also why some houses in Scandinavia, etc., have odd doors to nothing on the 2nd floor: not for good weather, but for when the snow blocks the first floor...
