Is it customary to ask someone to be your friend or does it happen naturally?

I find whenever I ask someone to be my friend I get one of two responses.
It’s either “What’s your name again? I’m reporting you to HR!”
Or
“Dude, back away from my car or I’m calling the cops!”

Does this happen to you?

I know you meant this to be amusing:)
However this is a real thing for a lot of people. I myself have not had a friend since the early 2000's (offline and to hang out with)
I miss having friends but not sure how to change it. Making friends is far different as an adult.
@ravenwind43 It's true. There are fewer natural or mandatory settings to meet people, or a variety of people. Work is usually the same group. If you want to meet someone new, you have to put yourself out there, through social settings or clubs and activities, which isn't always easy.
I'll be your friend until you find one in real life.

@Ghostinthemachine I don't knock online friends. Without them I would feel more isolated and lonely. So I appreciate everyone I have :)
@ravenwind43 So do I. Every friend, whether online or off, contributes to my life in a positive way
