Is it customary to ask someone to be your friend or does it happen naturally?

I find whenever I ask someone to be my friend I get one of two responses.
It’s either “What’s your name again? I’m reporting you to HR!”
Or
“Dude, back away from my car or I’m calling the cops!”

Does this happen to you?

It's not customary.
Friendship develops from many enouncters together, gradually getting to know each other better.

Sometimes people discover something they don't like, at which point:
they might decide to keep a friendly acquaintanceship at a slight distance,
or they might back off and go silent and cold,
or they might try to sort it out, accept the difference, and go deeper.

No two friendships are the same.

@hartfire These are very wise words. So lets start off as friends, and if we need to, dial it back to acquaintances within the 48 hour trial period, ok?
