I have traced my paternal ancestry to royston, essex (i think) and shalford, cambridge/hertfordshire. I have a few clues that they might have been in long melford and other areas of suffolk but i am not able to get there to research.
Do you know much about that area in the late 1400 - early 1500's?

@krf336 Royston is in Hertfordshire, Shalford is in Surrey but Shelford is a village just outside of Cambridge 😂😂😂

@MissTaken ok, hertfordshire, lol its hard to keep them straight having never been able to visit.
All the Maps i have seen call if shalford. Right in braintree i think near weathersfield. Maybe its just a misspronounciation by my yankee self. Lol

@krf336 Long Melford was a prosperous place in the late Medieval and Tudor periods thanks to the wool trade, and has many fine buildings from the period. Lavenham, near me, also became rich during that era and is widely considered one of the best preserved Medieval towns in the country.

@Angliaboy1 yes, I have seen pictures and read about a lot of the prominent families. The Cloptons, Martyn, Waryn, Norman, Danyel and others, I really want to visit sometime. There was a wealthy Wool merchant and weaver there in the 1400's with the same last name as me i would like more information about.

@Angliaboy1 Lavenham is well preserved because the town ran out of money and couldn't afford to upgrade its buildings. There loss is our gain.
