I think a friendship like that can work only if there is emotional maturity on both sides. What I often see happen is that one person feels a certain void or certain lack in their life and sees their friends as solutions to the problem as opposed to a support system.
It can work in theory, but a lot trickier in practice because people often aren't very emotionally mature
