How much would you spend on a wedding gift?

When I was a kid, the rule of thumb was $20, now it is $100. Is it me, or is this getting out of control? Or is this just a sign that I am getting old and complaining about inflation?

Weddings are becoming more and more about show and entertainment (and more expensively too)...they're more about making impressions on guests who in turn will (hopefully) give better gifts and even money to the couple). Many will claim this is not true but in reality it is. The actual ceremony play only a small part in it, most of the planning goes into the reception party.
@indyjoe I agree. Who cares about impressing everyone. I would rather spend the money on the honeymoon!
