If you developed strong feelings for a friend and they didn't feel the same way, would you stop being friends with them?

I have before because then it feels too awkward even talking to them anymore. Needless to say, I've been rejected many, many times. I no longer develop feelings for women anymore than as friends because of how much I've been rejected.
