How do you get to know people on SW?

One of the things I used to love about EP (and what brought me back here) is that there are some really intelligent, witty people that come here. Of course there are a lot of trolls mixed in too. What kinds of questions do you ask people when you meet them to help decide whether they are a quality connection and worth getting to know better?

I have met several people here and I try to get to know their thoughts and as much personal information as they are comfortable sharing. We start exchanging messages and I think sometimes I overwhelm them by writing lengthy messages or write too often. I don't think I've asked questions that are "too personal", but I let them know they can share anything they want to share. I hope you have better luck than I have had so far!
