Don't put all your apples in one basket
Almost thirteen years ago, I quit drinking and got divorced from my first wife. During this period of time, I lost all of the friends that I had accumulated during my life, basically from the time I was 16 until I was 36. This was either due to the divorce, and losing friends we had both had, or because I gave up drinking, and the people I had thought were friends were never really friends to being with and they walked away from me. During this time, I met two people who changed my life forever. One one line, who was going through marital problems of her own, and one here who had just gotten divorced and started a great friendship with me. Over the next year, we became more than friends, and a year after that we werw married. The friend that I had met online had told me that she had wanted to make things work with her husband, so for many reasons, I said goodbye to her. For years after, I was very happy with my wife, but I never realized that she was an obsession to me, and aside from my kids, she was my entire life. I had no other friends. We had our ups and downs, I even left her for a brief period and had a true relationship in real life with the friend I had met online years ago. That wasn't to be, however, and I came back to my wife. I assumed that our life was simple, yet very happy, until May of 2025 when I went to work, only to come home to find that she had left me. She told me that she couldn't do it anymore because I had been too controlling and it was a toxic relationship the last couple of years that we spent together. This may or may not be true, but it's not the point of what I'm trying to get at. What I'm saying is that during the nearly 13 years that we were together, I never sought out any friends in real life. And this is very sad to me. Now, when I need them the most, I have no friends to visit with me, to hang out with, to enjoy interests with. I put all my apples in one basket when I did nothing but love her, and now I have nothing to show for it. How foolish of me I was. Take it from someone who knows; be careful what you wish for.
