There were two instances.

The first was a friend from high school. We were in the same classes, attended the same parties, did tons of things together. I even spoke to the cops on his behalf once. Later on, though, a mutual friend reported something to me--he had been trashing my name all over the place, saying that I was bragging about my home sound system and how much it cost(I had no reason not to believe the mutual friend 100%)

I was slack-jawed, as what he said was untrue, but I figured if that's how he felt, I'm not going to beg for friendship, f him. And that's how it stayed till we became Facebook-only friends recently. But that was after almost 30 years.

Another was a woman I met as a fellow film fan in the 90s. We used to go to see movie previews together(she's a member of the National Board of Review) with my then-wife and I. One day, though, it all fell apart. I decided to car pool with her on a trip into NYC, so we met her at her house. I had parked on the street, but she invited me to park in her driveway "as it was safer," she said.

You can probably guess what comes next--she backed right into my car, a terrific shot. I was terribly upset but didn't want to upset her, either. She gave me the business card of a local body shop. When the guy answered, he said, "Ha! we get business from her all the time. She's a great customer!" Turned out the world is her demolition derby.

Once my car was repaired, we tried to get together again, but something clearly had changed. Maybe somewhere deep down I resented her for being so careless? I don't know, but we haven't spoken since, and that was almost 25 years ago.

@StarsMISaligned I don't know. She paid to get it fixed. I regret that we drifted apart.
