Yes, it's awful. Part of it is because we don't actually hear what we sound like when we talk. Our voice has reverbations and modal changes due to our skull and ear canal structure. So to us we sound one way, but played back we hear how it really is. I've even read that there is moderate evidence to suggest that what makes good singers is a particular set of conditions nn the ear and skull that allows some people accurately hear what their voice actually sounds like and can therefore more easily adjust their voice for tone and pitch. I don't know how accurate that is or how any research could objectively demonstrate it for evidence but it is believed by some for some reasons.
