@Subalugirl Because that is when the old soviet union fell1, that started talk about former countries in the soviet spere wanting to get into NATO. Started with German reunification and Chez, Hungary and Poland. Security experts started screaming that allowing NATO to creep towards Russia's front door was a very bad idea and would lead to conflict. You are altering the balance of power with historically leads to war.

@Subsumedpat Ukraine was Part of Old USSR and Russia wants it back...So what's the Problem ?

@Subalugirl Problem is that it won't stop there and we do tend to support sovereign states trying to remain so.

@Subalugirl No, and I think what is happening to Russia financially will slow down China's desire to take Taiwan.

@Subsumedpat The only failure was the West not declaring a new Marshall Plan to help rebuild Eastern Europe AND Russia.

It would have been far cheaper to show up with smiles, resources, help to rebuild, make new friends, bind our countries together better, than to have allowed the ground to continue to be such that the old Communists could still thrive there...
