Those were the days

Something sent my memory back to recall, incredibly, that until my mid teens our life was absolutely free of intrusive advertising or uninvited sales pitches*.

There were outdoor billboards of course, and ads scattered through the newspapers (real newspapers!) but BBC radio & TV were free & non-commercial and telemarketing hadn't been thought of. Most of today's population wouldn't even be able to imagine such a world.

*discounting the doorstep guys - Fuller Brush & Electrolux .

In the U.S., although radio and tv had advertising, most programs were sponsored by a single advertiser and relied a lot on product endorsement by the show (frequently woven into the script), jingles, and humor that was not that intrusive.

@dancingtongue I recall there was a satirical* "Moment of silence brought to you by the makers of ...."
*I first spelled it 'satyrical'. Thanks Mr Freud!

@Really I blame such mistakes on AI.
