Do people trim their kitties nails? I saw vets talking about it online so it seems like standard practice but my bf made it seem like an inhumane act?

I think I am good to leave their nails as they are.. they are not aggressive kitties...

I mean there are occasions when they scratch me lol , but i think mostly by accident .. like yesterday, I was working and one kitty wanted to sit on my lap or reach me on my work chair, which is a bit high, and so he jumped, and stuck his claws to my lap to climb up, ouch! I wear PJ shorts ALL the time even in winters..!! I may start wearing full length, not joking!

Thankfully, it wasn't much because I quickly retracted, but yea, kitty doesn't recognize I don't have furr like him and just wanted to get to where I was sitting and I think I was not paying attention to him as I was focused on work, so he did what he had to do! Lol

Or if they go into their rough play with each other while on my lap, I am like, no no, let me cover my legs first lol.

But all of this is not intentional aggressive behavior.. the other day though, when kitty was in that crazy interactive play mode/interval.. I was playing with him and teasing him, touching his neck and chest, and he sort of scratched me and bite me, but it was also done lightly and did not hurt mych, even though he was in a very energetic play mode. I think he was just in that hunting mode and playing with me rather than getting aggressive.. Usually they don't mind me touching their neck, chest and tummy, and one of them actually loves it and whenever I pet their neck, it is like I gave them some sort of instant sleeping pills lol but I guess in that mode it meant something!

So i don't feel a need to trim their nails, and I know they use it to climb as they stick them onto objects when they jump, and not just for scratching, and I definitely don't want to deprive them that or even lower their ability to climb well etc (I wonder if it would lower their ability to climb if nails are shorter or less sharp?) and if it would, it is one big reason i would not do it, because i want them to remain as active as possible, as it is only healthy for them..

But regardless, I was wondering what people thought about that? Because online it seems something very normal and done regularly but I guess there are mixed opinions? And I really never had cats before or pets for that matter.

We only did it when our last cat got old and wasn't so active and didn't go out as much as he used to then his claws got a bit long sometimes. It's not something we ever needed to do often and almost never when he was younger.

In my opinion it is something to be done only when strictly necessary for the cat's benefit, not the owner's convenience or furniture.
I take my cat to a vet to get trimmed

I trim my cats nails every 3-4 weeks.

I got to do it every two weeks otherwise I'll be in stitches

If their claws get too long they can get caught on something or torn off or ingrown. My beloved Ms. Kitten had one get ingrown and removed and was in a cast for a while. You can get a special tool to trim them. I wouldn't recommend using scissors.

Pretty sure you are gonna change your mind
I used to trim my cat’s claws periodically, but what I encouraged her to do was to use several scratching posts and boxes I provided. She preferred that and it made using clippers much less necessary.

Yes. If they aren't trimmed, they get snagged on things and they have trouble getting loose without hurting themselves. The sooner you get them used to it, the easier it will be for you and them. Watch how a professional does it.

@Poppies Thank you for the advice! I did watch a vet video... usually they are so calm and cuddly after they have their dinner which they like... i am thinking of doing it then! Let me know if this is not a good idea though

A vet told me to do it myself with ordinary nail clippers. Just don't go too far back and they will be fine. But as other people have said, a good scratching post (or piece of furniture) will mostly do the job.

Get them a scratching post. They’ll do if themselves with that.
I would trim my adult cat's nails when he stayed indoors. For safety reasons : a young child at home, and to protect pieces of furniture, and curtains. Cats that go out must be able to defend themselves.

@EarthlingWise That was exactly my point lol i am not putting them in the wild or something lol and if they go out for a walk, they will be on a leash with me!

My past cats never had their nails trimmed. They were registered with a good vet and he never mentioned their nails when I took them in. We did have big trees which they climbed daily, so perhaps that was enough.
TheLadyPotato · 36-40, F
Okay so most people are okay with that! He made it seem like I was going to torture them on a daily basis lol
Indoor cats it’s probably okay to trim their claws.
The cats don’t need to defend themselves.
But they do use them to climb.
BF does have a point.
But ask a vet.
It’s entirely up to you.
Munumbis · 46-50, M
They probably need them for defense and evasion like climbing up a tree.
