I often skip the syrup (to cut back on my sugar intake) and just spread butter or a nondairy spread, along with cinnamon, on each layer.
But if I do use syrup, I pour it over the top. In fact, I might just put a little on one part, eat that much, then keep eating until I decide I want another dab of syrup.
