@Stereoguy It's 2.30 in the afternoon here. I would think that most cafe's and pubs are still working though their lunchtime menus. We are lucky to have many independents in this little town. McD's have been refused planning twice.

@Stereoguy Yup! Our hospitality industry has undergone a sea-change in the last 30 years. Fine dining is available wherever you want.

@Stereoguy Unless, of course, you need the foodbank, or can't afford your rent/mortgage. Becoming as bad as some parts of the 'States. Sad.

@Stereoguy I am materially blessed: I sold off my company just before my 60th. I don't need/want flashy cars or a millionaires' house. I am comfortable.

@Stereoguy I guess you and I are of the generation where, if you want it you work for it. No free meals.

@Stereoguy You must have learned some tough lessons but, I enjoyed working on building sites - the guys, the work ethic, and laughs. I can imagine your vocabulary increased tremendously!

@Stereoguy I look back with very fond memories to those days. Graft, but good fun too.

@Stereoguy Before University, I did a load of dead-end jobs: at fifteen I was working in a warehouse. Sixteen onto building sites in the holidays. You know the kind of thing I mean, just getting money to give my mum my keep - no pressure from her, something I wanted to do.

@Stereoguy Not really a good man, just cut from a different kind of stone compared to many of the younger generations.
