On the road today driving from my office in the metro Washington DC area down to NAS Oceana in Virginia.
I stopped for lunch just off the highway and stopped for the first time in ages at a McDonald's. Back in high school and, admittedly, even through much of university I ate often at McDonald's. Way too often. But it was easy and cheap and quick... and back then that's all I looked for on a meal.
I've since gotten a bit more picky in my choices and even in the last few months been trying to actually make healthy choices. But as I said, this was a quick on the road stop.
I ordered the Quarter Pounder with bacon and cheese, a medium fries, and my Coke Zero. I'm not a big beef eater but I do like an occasional good burger. This was not that. This was a very dried out chewy slab of mystery meat. 🤦♀️ The fries, by weight, likely contained more salt and grease than potatoes. And my beloved Coke Zero was way more water and way less syrup that it was supposed to be.
I dumped it all after a few bites and sips. I'll arrive in Dam Neck hungry and got me a good Navy meal!!! 🙄😤

I know the feeling. I am vegetari-ish, which means that I do my best to choose non-meat options when I can, but I will eat meat when there are no good vegetarian options. One day I was craving a hamburger, so I broke down and went through the McDonald's drivethru. In my mind, it was going to be this glorious, juicy treat that I've been missing out on. Then I started eating. Eww, I thought. I gave up vegetarian for this???
But you lost me at Coke Zero. Why in the world would you subject yourself to anything Zero in the first place? I would rather give up soda entirely than drink Diets or Zeroes or anything of the sort. Which means these days I rarely drink any soda either. But yeah, you couldn't pay me to drink the fake stuff.
@ShadowSister You only consider it "fake" because you are conditioned to believe that cane sugar or corn sugar or some other sugar is the only "real" sweetener. This couldn't be further from the truth. Sugar, in excess, is awful for you in so many ways.
@sarabee1995 I agree. To your earlier point about sugar, I would counter that artificial sweeteners in excess are also harmful for you in so many ways. Personally, I prefer not to consume any soda in excess. So those few times when I do have soda, I can drink the one I don't have to acquire a taste for.
@sarabee1995 Maybe. Probably. Honestly, the whole idea of artificial sweeteners just freaks me out. I'm just not willing to give it a chance haha. Sorry, just being honest.
