How I Have Been Brought Up

Both mum and dad cook, and bake. I guess that comes from a time that, back at school, both boys and girls were taught to do it as a 'life skill' rather than a boy Vs girl thing, which I think it became a bit when I was younger.

But, I digress!

I was taught by both parents and also the school lessons that not only was it an important skill to have, but also such a cool thing.

We are talking about....creation!

Creating anything, from scratch, is always a great achievement.

So, yes, making pasta dishes - from someone that was a friend - from scratch, including the pasta, making curries and Fajitas...all stuff that I can do.

Cakes? Muffins, cookies, tarts...

Just somethings that I can do for people when they turn up at my door.

Well they offered Home Ec classes for boys starting in 10th grade at my school and that was 55 years ago. They got the easiest assignments….making foods from box mixes and that sort of thing. And for their sewing project they made karate robes. We were making loaves of bread from scratch in 10th grade home ec, sewing clothing we wore to school, and cooking various types of meat from scratch. Our big 1st semester project was cooking an entire Thanksgiving meal and having a feast.
@cherokeepatti We started home ec as boys in the 6th grade, I was a far better cook and baker than my teacher because my Dad started teaxhing me how when I was 5, I soon gained a reputation and all my classmates wanted to partner with me on kitchen days for that automatic A, we took it every year from 6th to 12th grade.

@NativePortlander1970 They should start it about then. When they are old enough to understand safety rules. Getting to sample the food is a good motivator to learn I bet. When I was in 7th grade we made some of our favorites at home that we learned how to make in home ec.
@cherokeepatti Definitely
