Commonly Irradiated Foods
In the U.S., the FDA has approved irradiation for:
Meat and poultry
Seafood (shellfish, fish)
Fresh produce (spinach, lettuce, fruits, vegetables)
Grains and cereals (wheat, rice)
Spices and dried herbs — the most widely irradiated category worldwide
This has been standard practice since the 1980's. To be upset that radiation is used to sterilize what he we eat is a little late coming now. ;-)

The claim is that despite going through radiation treatment, the food is not radioactive. Do you trust that?
Absolutely! Radiation is like light. If you point a lamp at an object, that doesn't turn into a light source itself. In exactly the same way, submitting an object to radiation doesn't make it emit radiation itself, i.e. become radioactive.That doesn't mean I'm convinced it's harmless, because radiation can cause damage like a loss of taste, nutritional value and who knows what else, but it becoming radioactive due to radiation is not a concern whatsoever. Anyone telling you that it does, doesn't understand chemistry and physics.
Interesting side note: bananas are radioactive by nature, but in such low dosage that you'd need to eat literal tons of them in a short timespan for the radiation to be harmful to you.

@jshm2 Yea but radiation sounds more permanent. Maybe sometimes they fk up and leave it on too long and then you bite into it and your gums melt.

The radiation used to irradiate food is the same type of radiation involved in radiation injuries (such as gamma rays or X-rays).
The circumstances and doses are dramatically different but it is the same radiation.
